Juicing: What’s working and lessons learned...

We’ve recently started juicing and are loving it! In addition to trying to eat as many whole fruits and veggies as we can in a day, juicing definitely seems to give us that added nutrient boost that always leaves us feeling great. All the pulp that's left over we’ve learned to use in two ways: (1) we include about a 1/4 cup of the veggie pulp in each of Lincoln’s meals (ooooo, healthy puppy :) (2) I usually puree the rest into soups and pasta sauces. It’s great knowing we’re able to use all the veggies up in their entirety.

That said, there are a few things I’ve learned about juicing that I thought I’d pass along:
  1. Nearly all greens taste great when juicing. So far we’ve used Kale, Collard Greens, Beet Greens, Spinach, Bok Choy, Romaine Lettuce, Green Leaf Lettuce, Butter Lettuce, Fennel, Parsley etc.
  2. Other veggies I often use and enjoy in the mix are Tomatoes, Carrots, Cucumbers, Zucchini, Red Peppers, etc.
  3. The single easiest way to make sure your veggie juice always tastes delicious is to add a couple apples to the mix. They give just the right amount of sweetness that makes drinking fresh veggie juice more a treat than a chore.
  4. I often add beets to my veggie mix because they’re just so darn good for us. Must remember, we are still enjoying a very green veggie juice... just now, it’s atomic purple in color.
  5. And in closing, I learned this valuable nugget last night...Never, ever, under any circumstances, include radishes in your juicing recipes *_* While a potpourri of vegetable types, colors and flavors is best when looking for optimal health benefits from juicing, never, ever let yourself get so eager that you include radishes in your recipe.

your juice will smell and taste like mold. and your breath after? well. let’s just leave that one alone. there’s enough gagging happening here on this side of the screen. no need to inflict the radish juicing trauma & regret on anyone else.

you have been warned.

o! and happy juicing!

  1. Looks like it turned out delicious! We love juicing! Thanks for sharing! Xo, M&K at

  2. Do you refrigerate your juice before you drink it? I choked down one glass of room temperature carrot and beet juice and went running back into the arms of smoothies.

Thanks for the tips! I love your ideas for using the whole veggie.

    1. YESSS!! Forgot to mention that part.. I definitely refrigerate, or shake the veggie juice over ice in a martini tumbler :) It must be freezing cold before I will drink it. Although thankfully, with the apples thrown in, it is a lot more palatable from the start. Straight veggie juice on the other hand....warm....well it's sent me running a time or two also. You're not alone ;)

  3. I love juicing too! I have difficult time consuming veggies in my diet so I tried juicing and I love it! Cleaning my juicer is a pain but it makes me feel good about myself whenever I do this.
