Making This House Our Home - New Bedroom Lighting

One thing Ryan and I learned in our last home a little later than we would have liked is that we should never hesitate to make our house our home; even if that means having to patch and paint a couple of decorative nails gone wrong :) Like our current home, we built our previous home to our specifications as well. We struggled with changing structural elements because we had just bought them that way through the builder only a couple years ago. Towards the end of our time in our previous home, we had really worked pasted that hesitancy and were relishing in taking on all those personal projects that made the house a home that really worked for us.

As we waited for our current home to be completed, we discussed often that we won't be hesitant this time around. Sure most of the home is exactly how we want it and we'll leave a lot of it as is. But if we couldn't get a custom chalkboard painted, floating shelves installed, or just the right lighting here and there through the builder we aren't going to be afraid to make a change or install those elements ourselves.

So that's exactly what we did in our bedroom recently! We had the ceiling vaulted in our room, which we love. The lighting choices available through the builder, however, left a little something to be desired in this space. We weren't in a rush to change this element though, unless we encountered the right light. Coincidentally, when we were in New Orleans at the end of January, Ryan and I couldn't get over the gorgeous light fixtures in our hotel lobby. I snapped a pic of them (and Ryan, unbeknownst to him ;) over breakfast one morning to remember them.

Fortunately, a couples weeks after moving in, we were thrilled to stumble upon this mini version one day while picking up some house essentials at Lowes. We took it home to give it a try and are super happy with the result! Also, can I tell you how impressed I am that Ryan busted out some serious electrical skills while installing this light and couple others around the house? He's pretty handy all around, but every now and then he surprises me with something I didn't know about him. Love that ♡

Here's hoping this is the first of many 'making this house our home' projects we tackle in an effort to love dwelling in this space more every day.

  1. Love the light fixture! The contrast is really nice with all the lighter tones in your room.
I totally agree with the idea of making a house your own. Best not to add everything all at once, and instead tweak to your personality and grow into the space.
I think I need to take the advice into consideration for our own place and stop trying to plan it so much ; )

    1. Agreed that its best not to add it all at once. The longer I'm in our new home, the more I'm realizing my original plans for certain spaces are changing now that I've lived in the space and given it some time to settle. Thought it's hard not to get excited and plan in anticipation. I feel you on that one friend :)
